Westchester Co. in New York Adopts Paid ‘Safe Time Leave’ Law

Jun 28, 2019

New Law Effective October 30, 2019

Beginning Oct. 30, 2019, in addition to paid sick time, employers in New York’s Westchester County, will need to provide up to 40 hours of paid leave to employees who are victims of domestic violence or human trafficking. Employees will be allowed to use this leave in full days or increments to attend court proceedings or to move to a safe location.

Under this new law, employers are required to notify their employees of their right to use this leave either upon hiring or by Jan. 28, 2020, whichever is later.

Finally, employers are prohibited from retaliating against employees who use this benefit, but the law will allow employers to require that employees prove they have used this paid leave for its intended purpose.
